Chapter 6

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right – Tekna (children) does not refer just to young children but to all offspring. Hupakouō (obey) literally means “to hear under,” that is, to listen with attentiveness and to heed what is heard.

2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—3“that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” - “that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you” (Ex. 20:12). Cf. Ex 21:15, 17.

4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord – Provoke to anger.

“The four primary factors necessary to prevent delinquency are: the father’s firm, fair, and consistent discipline; the mother’s supervision and companionship during the day; the parent’s demonstrated affection for each other and for the children; and the family’s spending time together in activities where all participated (Unraveling Juvenile Delinquency [Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard Univ. Press, 1950], pp. 257-71).

5. Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. – Can refer to employees. Slaves = doulos = bond slave.

9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him – Employers are to treat employees with fairness.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power – “Be strong” is in the present tense, the passive voice and the imperative mood. Paraphrase: Command: Allow yourself to be continually made strong in the Lord in His mighty power. “Power” kratei is talking about “that which overcomes resistance” as used in Christ’s miracles. And mighty ischyos is talking about God’s inherent power.

11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes – schemes = methodeia = “methods” = someone who lies in waiting, = “trickery.”

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms – The word Palē (struggle) was used of hand-to-hand combat and especially of wrestling. The rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms are all different ranks of fallen angels.

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand – “Put on” analambanō is technical military term describing preparation for battle.

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist – probably not the belt on the outside, but was underneath and used to gird up the soldiers undergarments so he could move freely - cingulum (girdle)

…..with the breastplate of righteousness in place – The breastplate was usually made of bronze with a leather backing. A blow through the breastplate was usually fatal. Protected the heart and vital organs.

15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace – The military shoes had nails sticking out of them so as to be able to grip the ground. They also wore greaves on their legs to protect them.

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one – The Roman shield was 4 ft by 2 1/2 ft. It was overlaid with linen and leather to absorb fiery arrows. Sometimes the leather would be soaked in water to also help extinguish flaming arrows.

17 Take the helmet of salvation – Helmets were made of leather and brass, or sometimes bronze and iron—so, no sword could pierce a good helmet. Cf. 1Thess 5:8

…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God – The Roman machaira was 18-24 inches long but was double edged. The Roman army was actually nicknamed the “short swords”.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints – Prayer = heavy artillery.

21 Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing – Tychicus is also mentioned in Acts 20:4; Colossians 4:7; 2 Timothy 4:12; and Titus 3:12.

Ephesians 5: 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.
Chapter 5

1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God – Cf. 1John 3:16.

Fragrant Offerings: (Lev 1-3)

Burnt Offering: Pictures Christ’s Complete devotion to the Father

Meal Offering: Pictures Christ’s perfection of character

Peace Offering: Pictures Christ making peace between sinners and God

Sin & Trespass Offerings: (Lev 4-5) Picture Christ taking the place of sinners. These are not considered fragrant offerings. There is nothing fragrant about sin!

3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people –

Sexual immorality – porneia - is a broad word that speaks of sexual sin.

Impurity – akatharsia – It is a more general term than porneia, referring to anything that is unclean and filthy. Jesus used the word to describe the rottenness of decaying bodies in a tomb (Matt. 23:27). The other ten times the word is used in the New Testament it is associated with sexual sin. It refers to immoral thoughts, passions, ideas, fantasies, and every other form of sexual corruption.

Greed – pleonexia – Every form of sexual immorality is an expression of greed.

4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving –

obscenity (aischrotēs) is any talk that is degrading and disgraceful.

foolish talk (Mōrologia) is derived from mōros (which means dull, or stupid, and is the word from which we get moron). It is sometimes referred to as low obscenity; foolish talk that comes from the drunk or the gutter mouth.

Course joking (Eutrapelia) – “able to turn easily.” This is the person who turns anything that is said into something suggestive sexually.

12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret – Cf. Ex 23:13.

14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” – based on Isaiah 26:19; 51:17; 52:1; and 60:1.

16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil – has the idea of “buying from time” or “redeeming time.” The word “opportunity” is kairos, which speaks of a measured, allocated, fixed season or epoch.

“Who made thee? Lysippus made me. What is thy name? My name is Opportunity. Why hast thou wings on thy feet? That I may fly away swiftly. Why hast thou a great forelock? That men may seize me when I come. Why art thou bald in back? That when I am gone by, none can lay hold of me.”

17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is – Cf. 1Thess 4:3.

18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit – “be filled with the Spirit” is in the present, passive imperative form. Continuously be filled with the Spirit and this is not a manufactured experience and is a command.

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ – Submit hupotassō is a military word which literally means, “to be under in rank.”

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord – submit is not in the original but it’s carried over from the previous verse. Lit: Wives to your husbands as to the Lord. “as to the Lord” mean “as is fitting to the Lord.”

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her – Agape – sacrificial, giving, absorbing, love.

26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word – The “Word” (rhēmati) refers to the “preached Word” of the gospel (cf. rhēma in Eph. 6:17; Rom. 10:8, 17; 1 Peter 1:25).

28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies – That is, as part of their own bodies.

31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” – Gen 2:24.

32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church - the marriage is a model and representative of the relationship between Christ and the church. And Christ and the church are examples for the marriage.

33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband – “respect’ here is the Greek word phobeō – a reverence fear.

Chapter 3

2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you – The word “administration” (oikonomia; cf. v. 9) has the sense of stewardship or a trust to be dispensed. It could be translated dispensation.

3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly – The word mystery is the Greek word mysterion and means something that was previously hidden but now divinely revealed.

10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms – Cf. 1Peter 1:10-12; Luke 15:10; 1Corinthians 4: 9, 11:10.

17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith – “dwell” – katoikeō – “to settle down and feel at home, to house permanently.”

18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ – Four dimensions of Christ’ love:

How wide is His love? Wide enough to reach everyone! How long is his love? From eternity to eternity!

How high is his love? We are seated in the heavenly realms! How deep is his love? As deep to reach the worst sinner!

Chapter 4

1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received – The word “live” peripateō means “to tread all around.” The word “worthy” (axiōs) means “equal weight”.

2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love – In the Greek culture, humility was considered to be a vice; a weakness that was only for slaves.

4 There is one body and one Spirit – Cf. Psalm 119:63.

9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? – “Earthly regions?” Scholars are divided: (1) It refers to Christ’s incarnation, His “descent” to the earth. (2) It refers to Christ’s death and His burial in the grave.(3) It refers to Christ descending into Hades between His death and resurrection. (Cf. Matt 12:40; Acts 2:27-28; Luke 16:19-31; 1 Peter 3:18-22

“The early church Fathers said that, after announcing His triumph over demons in one part of Sheol (Hades), He then opened the doors of another part of Sheol (Hades) to release those godly captives. Like the victorious kings of old, He recaptured the captives and liberated them, and henceforth they would live in heaven as eternally free sons of God.” John MacArthur

11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers –

Apostles – included the eleven men Jesus called (without Judas), plus others who are called apostles—such as Paul himself (Romans 1:1), Matthias (Acts 1:26), Barnabas (Acts 14:14), Jesus’ brother James (Galatians 1:19), Silas (1 Thessalonians 2:6), Andronicus and Junias (Romans 16:7). The qualifications for being an apostle were to have seen the risen Christ, to have been sent out by Jesus to preach the gospel, and to be building the foundation of the church. Paul also notes “signs, wonders, and miracles” as marks of a true apostle (2 Corinthians 12:12).

Prophets – These people, also laborers on the church’s “foundation” (2:20), had special gifts in ministering God’s messages to his people. At times they would foretell the future (Acts 11:28; 21:9, 11), but more often their job was to exhort, encourage, and strengthen God’s people; to forth tell God’s word (Acts 15:32; 1 Corinthians 14:29).

Evangelists – The traveling ministers, similar to the missionaries of today. They went to non-Christian people and proclaimed the gospel to them, often being the first to start a church in a particular area (Acts 21:8; 2 Timothy 4:5).

Pastors and teachers – Pastors and teachers are best understood as one office of leadership in the church and served in the local churches. Like shepherds, they tended God’s “flock,” handling the day-to-day affairs of their congregation—administering, counseling, guiding, feeding. As the apostolic era came to a close, the office of pastor-teacher emerged as the highest level of local church leadership.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption – In context, grieving the Holy Spirit is lying, stealing, anger, unwholesome talk, bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice etc.

Chapter 2

1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins – Cf. James 2:26.

“Transgressions” – paraptōma means “a side slip.” A challenging of the boundaries of God.

“Sin” – hamartia “To miss the mark.”

2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient – The ruler of the kingdom of the air is Satan.

Satan’s Titles:

Ruler of the kingdom of the air Eph 2:2

God of this age 2Cor 4:4

Prince of this world John 12:31

Prince of demons Matt 9:34

The “air” (tou aeros) refers to the space around the earth, and thus, this is Satan’s sphere of influence Cf. Eph 6:12; Rev 16:17.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9not by works, so that no one can boast –

Man is not saved by works

Man is not saved by faith + works

Man is saved by grace though faith alone

Salvation is a gift, not a reward. If we can’t be saved by our good works, can we be lost by our bad works????

“It is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee; it is Christ. It is not thy hope in Christ that saves thee; it is Christ. It is not even thy faith in Christ, though that be the instrument; it is Christ’s blood and merit.”C.H. Spurgeon

10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do – workmanship – ποίημα poiēma from which we get the word poem.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ – Cf. Lev 17:11.

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility – Cf. Micah 5: 4-5.

Ephesus was the capital of Procounsular Asia. The city was considered second only to Rome.

Consecrated to the goddess Artemis also known as Diana. The temple of Artemis was a building that had 127 56’ columns which were 4x larger than the Parthenon.

Paul had spent a short time in Ephesus on his way back to Antioch from his second missionary journey (Acts 18:19-22).

On his third missionary journey he stayed in Ephesus three years (Acts 20:31) where he baptized a dozen of John the Baptist’s followers (Acts 19:1-7).

He had discussions in the hall of Tyrannus (Acts 19:8-10).

Unusual miracles occurred (Acts 19:11-12),

Strange events took place (Acts 19:13-16),

Even sorcerers were converted (19:17-20).

The city rioted over the silversmith Demetrius who lost of business because of people who turned to Christ from worshiping the great Ephesian goddess Artemis (Acts 19:23-41).

On Paul’s return to Jerusalem from his third missionary journey he gave a farewell address to the Ephesian elders at the coast of Miletus (Acts 20:13-35).

That was his last time to see them (Acts 20:36-38), unless Paul visited Ephesus after he was in Rome (cf. 1 Tim. 1:3 with 3:14).

Ephesians was probably written between 60 and 62 A.D. shortly after Colossians. One of the “Prison Epistles” (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon).

Key phrase – in Christ (or in Him)

Chapter 1

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus – In several ancient manuscripts, the words “in Ephesus” do not appear. So many believe this was a circular letter intended for all the churches in that area.

2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ – Paul’s usual greeting. Charis and eirēnē, the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew shālôm.

In the Greek, verses 3-14 are one long sentence and encompass the past, present, and future of God’s eternal purpose for the church.

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ – not with material blessings, but “with every Spiritual blessing” Cf. 1Tim 6:3-8.

“Heavenly realms” occurs five times in this letter:

1) Believers are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the “heavenly realms” (1:3). 2) Christ is seated at God’s right hand in the “heavenly realms” (1:20).

3) We have been raised up to sit with Christ in the “heavenly realms” (2:6). 4) God is being made known to the rulers and authorities in the “heavenly realms” (3:10). 5) We struggle against the spiritual forces of evil in the “heavenly realms” (6:12).

4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight – The Doctrine of Election Cf. (Rom. 8:29; 9:11; 1 Thess. 1:3-4; 1 Pet. 1:2). Eklegō (chose) indicates God’s totally independent choice. Yet man also has free choice: Cf. John 3:16; 11:26; Josh. 24:15; Isa. 55:1; Matt. 3:1-2; 4:17; 11:28-30; John 5:40; 6:37; 7:37-39; Rev. 22:17. Cf. Deut 7:6-8.

In love(agapē) 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ – Paul used the noun (agapē, “love”) 10 times in Ephesians compared with 65 times in all his other epistles combined. Cf. Rev 2 “forsaken your first love”.

7 In him we have redemption through his blood – Redemption apolutrōsis means “To loose away from something. To Ransom.”

9 And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ – Mustērion – something that was previously hid but is now revealed.

“Mystery” in the N.T.

Of the kingdom of Heaven Matt 13:5-50

Of iniquity 2Thess 2:7

Of Babylon Rev 17-18

Of the church as one body Eph 3:1-12

Of the church as Christ’ bride Eph 5:23-32

Of the in-living Christ Gal 2:20; Col 1:26-27

Of the fullness of Godhead 1Cor 2:7; Col 2:2,9

Of Godliness 1Tim 3:16

Of the Rapture 1Cor 15:51-52; 1Thess 4:13-17

Of Israel’s present blindness Rom 11:25

Of the will of God Ephesians

Of the Seven Stars Rev 1:20

We are stewards of these mysteries 1Cor 4:1

13 Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory – The word “seal” indicates: 1)) security (Matt. 27:66; Eph. 4:30), 2) authentication and approval (John 6:27), 3) certification of genuineness (John 3:33), 4)identification of ownership (2 Cor. 1:22; Rev. 7:2; 9:4).

18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints – We are HIS inheritance. Cf. Deut 32:8-9.

19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms – 1. dunamis (his incomparably great power), from which we get dynamite and dynamo. 2. energeia (working, exerted), the energizing force of the Spirit that empowers believers to live for the Lord. 3. ischus (mighty), which carries the idea of endowed power or ability. 4. kratos (strength), which may also be translated “dominion” (1 Tim. 6:16) or “power” (Heb. 2:14). “power that overcomes resistance.”
