48-56 – Paul’s missionary journeys
56-60 – Paul was slowly making his way through the Roman courts, arriving ultimately at Rome.
61-62 – Paul was held under house arrest in Rome, at the end of which time, he was released.
62-67 – Paul traveled more or less freely about. Wrote 1Timothy and Titus.

66-67 – Paul wrote 2Timothy after being recaptured and once again imprisoned. This represents the last Pauline Epistle.
67-68 – Paul beheaded in Rome

2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord – Paul only says grace and peace in his greetings (Romans 1:7, 1 Corinthians 1:3, 2 Corinthians 1:2, Galatians 1:3, Ephesians 1:2, Philippians 1:2, Colossians 1:2, 1 Thessalonians 1:1, 2 Thessalonians 1:2). But when he starts writing the pastors – Timothy and Titus – it is grace, mercy, and peace!
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands – Gift translates the Greek word charisma. Cf. 1Peter 4:10; 2Timothy 4:2.
7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline – Timidity (deilia) can also be translated fear or cowardice. “Self-discipline” (sōphronismos) has the idea of a calm, self-controlled mind, in contrast to the panic and confusion. “spirit” should be capitalized:
“For God gave us His Spirit, it was not timidity that we received, but power, love and self discipline.” Gordon Fee NIBC page 227
12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day – Cf. John 10:28-30.
1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. – Cf. Ephesians 6:10-18.
4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer – In Joshua 5, Jesus appeared to Joshua as Commander of the army of the LORD (Joshua 5:14).
6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops – Cf. Proverbs 24:30-34.
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth – “Do your best” is translated “study” in the KJV. But the word spoudazō means “to use speed, that is, to make effort.” Correctly Handles orthotomeō, means literally to cut straight.
21 If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work – Cf. 1John 1:9.
22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart – Flee! (pheugō) Be a fugitive!
