Chapter 2

1    As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins – Cf. James 2:26.

“Transgressions” – paraptōma means “a side slip.”  A challenging of the boundaries of God.

“Sin” – hamartia “To miss the mark.”

2    in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient – The ruler of the kingdom of the air is Satan.

Satan’s Titles:

Ruler of the kingdom of the air                        Eph 2:2

God of this age                                  2Cor 4:4

Prince of this world                            John 12:31

Prince of demons                               Matt 9:34

The “air” (tou aeros) refers to the space around the earth, and thus, this is Satan’s sphere of influence Cf. Eph 6:12; Rev 16:17.

8    For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9not by works, so that no one can boast –

Man is not saved by works

Man is not saved by faith + works

Man is saved by grace though faith alone

Salvation is a gift, not a reward. If we can’t be saved by our good works, can we be lost by our bad works????

“It is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee; it is Christ. It is not thy hope in Christ that saves thee; it is Christ. It is not even thy faith in Christ, though that be the instrument; it is Christ’s blood and merit.”C.H. Spurgeon

10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do – workmanship – ποίημα poiēma  from which we get the word poem.

13   But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ – Cf. Lev 17:11.

14   For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility – Cf. Micah 5: 4-5.

18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit – Notice the Trinity.
