Halloween: Innocent or Deadly?
A. Halloween – In A.D. 800 the Roman Catholic Church moved “ALL SAINTS DAY” from May to November 1st. The new day was called All HALLOW’S DAY and it soon became the custom to call the evening before ALL HALLOW EVE or ALL HALLOWE’EN. It was shortened and called HALLOWEEN.
B. Trick Or Treat – The Celts were to set out a TREAT of food and fruit, and provide the wandering spirit with shelter for the night. If the demon was satisfied with your TREAT, it was believed that they would not TRICK you by casting an evil spell on you causing havoc.

C. The Jack-O’-Lantern - The legend of “Irish Jack”: A stingy drunk named Jack tricked the devil into climbing an apple tree for an apple, but then cut the sign of a cross into the trunk of the tree—preventing the devil from coming down. Jack forced the devil to swear he would never come after Jack’s soul. The devil reluctantly agreed. When Jack eventually died he was turned away from the gates of heaven because of his life of drunkenness and selfishness. He next went to the devil who also rejected him, keeping his promise. As Jack was leaving hell (and happening to be eating a turnip) the devil threw a live coal at him. Condemned to wander the earth, Jack put the coal inside the turnip, making a “jack o’lantern.” Eventually, pumpkins replaced the turnip.
D. Black Cats - Druid priests believed that cats were once human beings but were reincarnated as punishment for evil deeds.
E. Bobbing For Apples – The practice was used to predict the future and honor the gods of harvest and fruit.
F. Witches – The idea of witches probably goes all the way back to the worship of Baal and Ashtoreth. The broomstick and pointed hat were actually phallic symbols.
G. Dracula – Vlad Tepes III – During his six year rule it was estimated by a reliable source that Dracula massacred 100,000 men, women and children.
Deuteronomy 18: 9When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. 13You must be blameless before the LORD your God. 14The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. 1 Corinthians 10: 19What am I trying to say? Am I saying that the idols to whom the pagans bring sacrifices are real gods and that these sacrifices are of some value? 20No, not at all. What I am saying is that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want any of you to be partners with demons. NLT
