Bereshith: úéLØàø á berēʼšı̂ṯ – “In the beginning”
Genesis: From LXX Greek “Geneseos” – “Origin” or “source”
Pentateuch: Greek – “Five (Tools) Books” – Gen.; Ex.; Lev.; Num.; Deut.
Author: Moses – Best qualified – Acts 7:22
Moses qualified as the author in the following passages:
The Pentateuch: Ex 17:14; 24:4; 34:28; Numbers 33:2; Deut 31:9, 22, 24.
The Old Testament: Joshua 1:7-8; 23:6; 2Kings 14:6; 21:8; Ezra 3:2; 6:18; Nehemiah 8:1; Daniel 9:11-13.
The New Testament: Matthew 8:4; 19:7-8; Luke 5:14; 16:29; John 5:46; 7:19; Acts 3:22; 15:21; 15:1; Romans 10:5; 19; 2Cor 3:15;). And Jesus Himself (John 5:46).
Chapter 1
1 In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth – Seven words including space, time and matter.
The book of Genesis does not argue for the existence of God; it simply says that everything exists because of God.
“By faith we understand:” Hebrews 11:3
“God” – íéä”GàÁ eõlohOEòòym – Plural! Hint of the trinity.
“Created” – àøˆá˜ baôraô, “create, give being to something new.” Out of nothing!
2 Formless and empty – Isaiah 45:18
a. Gap Theory: Satan’s fall caused the earth to be in chaos.
b. Progressive Theory: the first two verses of Genesis are the original creation in its crude and chaotic state out of nothing.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations?” (Job 38:4).
3-5 Light – Notice verses 14-19. See 1john 1:5, Rev. 22:5

6-8 Expanse – ò÷−øˆ raôqa, “spread out by beating, as leaf gold.”

11-13 Variety and genius

24-25 Sixth day – Creation of animals and man
26-27 In Our Image: Man is Related to the Eternal Being Himself. Man is spirit mind and body. A spirit to commune with God, a mind to obey God and a body to serve Him.
28-30 All animals and Man were vegetarian
